Empirical Strategies for Estimating Discrete Games with Multiple Equilibria

چکیده

I provide two practical estimators that can be used by empirical researchers to conduct inference on parameters in static discrete response models with many decision makers and/or when the strategy space is large. The inferential approach is to estimate directly the set of parameter values that satisfy the constraints imposed by the model. Every parameter in the identified set of interest is consistent with a model of the process that generated the observed data. In this paper, the first estimator is based on measuring the distance between the vector of observed choice probabilities and the set of predicted choice probabilities. This provides a sharp estimate of the set of identified parameter values. The second estimator exploits bounds on the true and unobserved likelihood function to obtain estimates of the set of identified parameters. This is a simple estimator to implement but is not sharp. A Monte Carlo experiment compares the small sample behavior of the two estimators. I also illustrate the estimator using data on entry in airline markets.

Estimating Discrete Games

T paper provides a critical review of the methods for estimating static discrete games and their relevance for quantitative marketing. We discuss the various modeling approaches, alternative assumptions, and relevant trade-offs involved in taking these empirical methods to data. We consider games of both complete and incomplete information, examine the primary methods for dealing with the coher...

Identification and Estimation of Incomplete Information Games with Multiple Equilibria∗

The presence of multiple equilibria in games is a big challenge for identification and estimation. Without information of the equilibrium selection, it is impossible to perform counterfactual analysis. Allowing for possibly multiple equilibria, this paper provides nonparametric identification of finite games with incomplete information. Upon observing players’ actions from cross-sectional games...

Confidence Regions for Parameters in Discrete Games with Multiple Equilibria, with an Application to Discount Chain Store Location∗

In this paper, we consider the empirical problem of estimating the underlying profit function of firms from “revealed choice” data on entry in a cross-section of oligopoly markets. One problem faced in the earlier literature is the problem of multiple equilibrium, which makes traditional maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) techniques difficult to implement. The problem of multiple equilibria is...

The Turnpike Property for Dynamic Discrete Time Zero-sum Games

We consider a class of dynamic discrete-time two-player zero-sum games. We show that for a generic cost function and each initial state, there exists a pair of overtaking equilibria strategies over an infinite horizon. We also establish that for a generic cost function f , there exists a pair of stationary equilibria strategies (xf ,yf ) such that each pair of “approximate” equilibria strategie...
